EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -On July 1, shortly before the main attack on San Juan Heights, the Battle of El Caney began. This was initially supposed to be a brief engagement, but it lasted all day. The Buffalo Soldiers of the Twenty-fifth Infantry joined 6, 600 other Americans in attacking El Caney.
Concept note-2: -The Battle of Kettle Hill (generally known as San Juan Hill) fought on July 1, 1898, was the most significant since it was the only battle that involved all four buffalo soldier regiments, the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry.
Concept note-3: -The 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry (Rough Riders), along with the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, began a near simultaneous assault supporting the regulars of the 10th Cavalry (Buffalo Soldiers) up Kettle Hill, supported by the fire of three Gatling guns commanded by Lt. John H. Parker.
Concept note-4: -From the crest, the Americans found themselves overlooking Santiago, and the next day they began a siege of the city. On July 3, the Spanish fleet was destroyed off Santiago by U.S. warships under Admiral William Sampson, and on July 17 the Spanish surrendered the city-and thus Cuba-to the Americans.
Concept note-5: -Battle of San Juan Hill, (1 July 1898), also known as the Battle of San Juan Heights, the most significant U.S. land victory, and one of the final battles, of the Spanish-American War.
