Concept note-1: -The most famous of all the units fighting in Cuba, the “Rough Riders ” was the name given to the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt.

Concept note-2: -Among Theodore Roosevelt’s many lifetime accomplishments, few capture the imagination as easily as his military service as a “Rough Rider” during the Spanish-American War.

Concept note-3: -Following the sinking of USS Maine, President William McKinley needed to muster a strong ground force swiftly, which he did by calling for 125, 000 volunteers to assist in the war.

Concept note-4: -During the Spanish-American War, Roosevelt was lieutenant colonel of the Rough Rider Regiment, which he led on a charge at the battle of San Juan. He was one of the most conspicuous heroes of the war.

Concept note-5: -Rough Rider, member of 1st Volunteer Cavalry, in the Spanish-American War, member of a regiment of U.S. cavalry volunteers recruited by Theodore Roosevelt and composed of cowboys, miners, law-enforcement officials, and college athletes, among others.
