Concept note-1: -President Theodore Roosevelt oversaw the realization of a long-term United States goal-a trans-isthmian canal. Throughout the 1800s, American and British leaders and businessmen wanted to ship goods quickly and cheaply between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

Concept note-2: -The Panama Canal is a passageway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the country of Panama. Panama was chosen because it is the narrowest landmass between these two oceans.

Concept note-3: -Panama Canal, Spanish Canal de Panamá, lock-type canal, owned and administered by the Republic of Panama, that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the narrow Isthmus of Panama.

Concept note-4: -The canal shortcut made it possible for vessels to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in half the time previously required.
