Concept note-1: -It was governed from Madrid much as it had been governed since it was first occupied and settled by the Spaniards in 1511. Not that Cubans were as compliant in 1898 as they had been during most of the colonial period, especially when the other Spanish Americans severed their ties with the mother country in the 1820s.
Concept note-2: -After Spain’s defeat by U.S. and Cuban forces during the War of 1898, Spain relinquished sovereignty over Cuba. Following the war, U.S. forces occupied Cuba until 1902, when the United States allowed a new Cuban government to take full control of the state’s affairs.
Concept note-3: -Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, (born c. 1465, Cuéllar, Spain-died 1524, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba), conquistador and first Spanish governor of Cuba.
Concept note-4: -From the 15th century, it was a colony of Spain, and slavery was abolished in 1886, remaining a Spanish colony until the Spanish–American War of 1898, when Cuba was occupied by the United States and gained independence in 1902.
