Concept note-1: -Who won the Russo-Japanese war? Japan won a convincing victory over Russia, becoming the first Asian power in modern times to defeat a European power.

Concept note-2: -Japan issued a declaration of war on 8 February 1904. However, three hours before Japan’s declaration of war was received by the Russian government, and without warning, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the Russian Far East Fleet at Port Arthur. Tsar Nicholas II was stunned by news of the attack.

Concept note-3: -Japan initiated several negotiations with Russia, begin-ning in 1898 and most prominently from August 1903 to January 1904. However, negotiations broke down and Japan launched a successful surprise attack against the Russian naval base at Port Arthur on February 8, 1904.

Concept note-4: -During the subsequent Russo-Japanese War, Japan won a series of decisive victories over the Russians, who underestimated the military potential of its non-Western opponent.

Concept note-5: -Russo-Japanese War, (1904–05) Conflict between Russia and Japan over territorial expansion in East Asia. After Russia leased the strategically important Port Arthur (now Lüshun, China) and expanded into Manchuria (northeastern China), it faced the increasing power of Japan.
