Concept note-1: -by David Trask. Between 1895 and 1898 Cuba and the Philippine Islands revolted against Spain. The Cubans gained independence, but the Filipinos did not. In both instances the intervention of the United States was the culminating event.
Concept note-2: -Poet and journalist José Julián Martí, the ideological spokesman of the revolution, drew up plans for an invasion of Cuba while living in exile in New York City. Máximo Gómez y Báez, who had commanded the rebel troops during the Ten Years’ War, was among those who joined Martí’s invasion force.
Concept note-3: -USS Maine U.S. Naval Historical Center Photograph The mysterious destruction of the U.S. battleship Maine in the Cuban harbor of Havana on February 15, 1898, led to a declaration of war against Spain two months later.
Concept note-4: -Spain responded to the Cuban insurgency by sending 100, 000 soldiers to Cuba in 1895. After the United States government was drawn into the conflict in 1898, the end of Spanish rule became a reality.
Concept note-5: -The Cuban War of Independence (Spanish: Guerra de Independencia cubana), fought from 1895 to 1898, was the last of three liberation wars that Cuba fought against Spain, the other two being the Ten Years’ War (1868–1878) and the Little War (1879–1880).
