Concept note-1: -After his second deportation to Spain in 1878, the pro-independence Cuban activist José Martí moved to the United States in 1881, where he began mobilizing the support of the Cuban exile community in Florida, especially in Ybor City in Tampa and Key West.

Concept note-2: -In 1895 the Cuban patriot and revolutionary, José Martí, resumed the Cuban struggle for freedom that had failed during the Ten Years’ War (1868-1878).

Concept note-3: -In 1892 he founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party to organize the coming struggle. By early 1895, his preparations were complete. He would set sail with the generals from the last struggle and considerable supplies from Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Concept note-4: -In the 1890’s Cubans began to agitate once again for their freedom from Spain. The moral leader of this struggle was José Martí, known as “El Apóstol, ” who established the Cuban Revolutionary Party on January 5, 1892 in the United States.

Concept note-5: -The rebellion was led by José Martí. He was a Cuban poet and journalist who had been living in exile in New York. Martí organized a campaign of destroying property, especially American-owned sugar plantations, as a way of provoking the United States to action. The rebels wanted the United States to join their cause.
