Concept note-1: -stale·mate ˈstāl-ˌmāt. Synonyms of stalemate. : a drawing position in chess in which a player is not in checkmate but has no legal move to play. : a drawn contest : deadlock. also : the state of being stalemated.

Concept note-2: -Stalemate describes a condition in war in which neither side can change the front lines dramatically no matter how hard it tries. WWII never reached stalemate in Europe. The opponents alternated offensive and defensive campaigns but were almost always moving. World War I epitomized stalemate.

Concept note-3: -Stalemate is a kind of draw that happens when one side has NO legal moves to make. If the king is NOT in check, but no piece can be moved without putting the king in check, then the game will end with a stalemate draw!
