EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Approximately 150, 000 American Indians participated in military service or agricultural and industrial jobs to support the war effort. The exodus from reservations, which accelerated after the war, eroded the physical boundaries that separated Native peoples from mainstream America.

Concept note-2: -In April 1942, Gen. Douglas MacArthur became Supreme Commander, Southwest Pacific Area, with headquarters in Australia; and Adm. Chester W. Nimitz became Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Area, with headquarters in Hawaii.

Concept note-3: -How did wartime experiences change Mexican-American life in California? d. Employment opportunities in the defense sector prompted Mexican-Americans to find work outside of their neighborhoods.

Concept note-4: -An estimated 33, 000 Japanese Americans served in the military during and immediately after World War II, about 10, 000 in the 442nd and 4, 000 as part of the MIS. Approximately eight hundred Japanese Americans died in the service of their country during World War II.
