Concept note-1: -Overview. World War II provided unprecedented opportunities for American women to enter into jobs that had never before been open to women, particularly in the defense industry. Women faced challenges in overcoming cultural stereotypes against working women, as well as finding adequate childcare during working hours.

Concept note-2: -What roles did minorities and women play in the armed forces during World War II? Minorities and women served in the army, navy, and air force as nurses, pilots, sailors, and combat troops.

Concept note-3: -What difficulties did women and minorities face in the wartime work force? Women and minorities faced discrimination. Some defense plants refused to hire blacks. Women were not paid as much as men.
