Concept note-1: -patriotism, feeling of attachment and commitment to a country, nation, or political community. Patriotism (love of country) and nationalism (loyalty to one’s nation) are often taken to be synonymous, yet patriotism has its origins some 2, 000 years prior to the rise of nationalism in the 19th century.

Concept note-2: -Imperialism and Nationalism By the late 1800s, nationalism, or a feeling of intense pride in one’s homeland, had become a powerful idea in Europe. Nationalists place primary emphasis on promoting their homeland’s culture and interests above those of other countries.

Concept note-4: -The idea of ‘aggressive nationalism’ is responsible for the commencement of World War I. It began with the development of this feeling among the Slavic people, who wanted to establish a Greater Serbia solely for the Slavic people. For this purpose, they had to remove Austria-Hungary from the Balkans.

Concept note-5: -Nationalism was a particularly important cause of World War I due to several key factors. For instance, it caused nations to build up their armies and led to increased militarism. As well, it created extremely high tensions in Europe in the decades before the outbreak of the First World War.
