Concept note-1: -At the end of the Second World War, Germany was divided into four zones of occupation under the control of the United States, Britain, France and the Soviet Union. Berlin, although located within the Soviet zone, was also split amongst the four powers.

Concept note-2: -In October of 1949, the Soviet Union responded with the establishment of the German Democratic Republic, a Communist state known as East Germany. In 1952, East Germany began policing its Western border to stop the flight of engineers, scientists and doctors to West Germany.

Concept note-3: -West Germany, or the Federal Republic of Germany, was officially established in May 1949. East Germany, or the German Democratic Republic, was established in October 1949.

Concept note-4: -The period after 1945: Europe is in ruins, disempowered and divided between two opposing global forces, the United States of America and the Soviet Union.

Concept note-5: -After World War II, defeated Germany was divided into Soviet, American, British and French zones of occupation. The city of Berlin, though technically part of the Soviet zone, was also split, with the Soviets taking the eastern part of the city.
