Concept note-1: -The goal of the temperance movement in the United States was to make the production and sale of alcohol illegal. Supporters believed that prohibiting alcohol would solve a number of society’s problems, making people safer, healthier, and more productive.

Concept note-2: -Temperance supporters wanted progressive reforms in the U.S., including the prohibition of alcohol. In 1919, the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution went into effect. This amendment outlawed the production and sale of alcohol in the U.S.

Concept note-3: -The Eighteenth Amendment was passed by Congress in 1917, ratified in 1919, and went into effect at 12:01 am on January 17, 1920. The temperance movement had triumphed. Their victory was short-lived, however, as many Americans made and drank alcohol in violation of the law.

Concept note-4: -The goal of the temperance movement was to restrict the consumption and production of alcohol as they saw intemperance as the root cause of many social problems as well as moral degeneration. The movement was more successful in the southern states where many state legislatures banned the consumption of alcohol.

Concept note-5: -The temperance movement, rooted in America’s Protestant churches, first urged moderation, then encouraged drinkers to help each other to resist temptation, and ultimately demanded that local, state, and national governments prohibit alcohol outright.
