Concept note-1: -On September 18, 1931, an explosion destroyed a section of railway track near the city of Mukden. The Japanese, who owned the railway, blamed Chinese nationalists for the incident and used the opportunity to retaliate and invade Manchuria.

Concept note-2: -The Japanese continued to advance, despite Chinese opposition. By February 27, 1932, the last Chinese opposing the Japanese were forced to surrender all of Manchuria was in Japanese hands.

Concept note-3: -Throughout the 1920s, the League was a centerpiece of Japan’s policy to maintain diplomatic accommodation with the Western powers. Conflict arose with the League when Japan invaded northeast China in 1931 and Japan announced its withdrawal two years later.
