EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -In September 1915 the Entente allies launched another offensive, with the French Third Battle of Artois, Second Battle of Champagne and the British at Loos. The French had spent the summer preparing for this action, with the British assuming control of more of the front to release French troops for the attack.

Concept note-2: -The majority of the fighting took place in Europe along two fronts: the western front and the eastern front. The western front was a long line of trenches that ran from the coast of Belgium to Switzerland. A lot of the fighting along this front took place in France and Belgium.

Concept note-3: -The Battle of the Somme (1 July-18 November 1916) was a joint operation between British and French forces intended to achieve a decisive victory over the Germans on the Western Front.

Concept note-4: -By 1918, the western front trenches ran in a four-hundred-mile line through France and Belgium from the North Sea to the Alps. Each set of trenches consisted of several lines: a main line and up to four lines behind it.
