Concept note-1: -The Japanese defenders of the island were dug into bunkers deep within the volcanic rocks. Approximately 70, 000 U.S. Marines and 18, 000 Japanese soldiers took part in the battle. In thirty-six days of fighting on the island, nearly 7, 000 U.S. Marines were killed. Another 20, 000 were wounded.
Concept note-2: -In the bloodiest battle in Marine Corps history, 27 Marines and sailors were awarded the Medal of Honor for action on Iwo Jima. No other campaign surpassed that number.
Concept note-3: -Battle of Iwo Jima, (February 19–March 16, 1945), World War II conflict between the United States and the Empire of Japan. The United States mounted an amphibious invasion of the island of Iwo Jima as part of its Pacific campaign against Japan.
