EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Japan refused to leave Manchuria. Instead, Japan left the League. Many countries had important trading links with Japan. The League could not agree on sanctions or even a ban on weapons sales.

Concept note-2: -Manchurian Crisis: It took a year to report, during which time the Japanese continued to expand into Manchuria. Sanctions were not used. A Special Assembly voted that Japan should withdraw from Manchuria. When the Japanese refused and left the League of Nations, the League responded by doing nothing.

Concept note-3: -Japan gave formal notice of its withdrawal from the League of Nations on March 27, 1933. The United States announced the Stimson Doctrine, which warned Japan that areas gained by conquest would not be recognized.

Concept note-4: -The Manchurian Crisis (1931-33) saw the League fail to deal with Japan invading Manchuria, undermining the League and showing how it was powerless to stop an attack similar to this one.

Concept note-5: -The League appointed the Lytton Commission, which in October 1932 recommended that Manchuria become a state under Chinese sovereignty. But as the British had feared, Japan had already consolidated its hold on Manchuria.
