The Selective Service Act

EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -The Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, created the country’s first peacetime draft.

Concept note-2: -The Draft and WWII On September 16, 1940, the United States instituted the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, which required all men between the ages of 21 and 45 to register for the draft. This was the first peacetime draft in United States’ history.

Concept note-3: -President Roosevelt’s signing of the Selective Training and Service Act on September 16, 1940, began the first peacetime draft in the United States.

Concept note-4: -On May 18, 1917, Congress passed the Selective Service Act, which authorized the Federal Government to temporarily expand the military through conscription. The act eventually required all men between the ages of 21 to 45 to register for military service.

Concept note-5: -All men 18 years and older had to register with the Selective Service. All men between the ages of 18 to 25 were eligible to be drafted for a service requirement of 21 months.
