Concept note-1: -The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.

Concept note-2: -The United Nations plays an important role in conflict prevention, using diplomacy, good offices and mediation. Among the tools the Organization uses to bring peace are special envoys and political missions in the field.

Concept note-3: -Over the decades, the UN has helped to end numerous conflicts, often through actions of the Security Council-the organ with primary responsibility, under the United Nations Charter, for the maintenance of international peace and security.

Concept note-4: -Article 34 of the Charter empowers the Security Council to investigate any dispute, or any situation that is likely to endanger international peace and security.
