Concept note-1: -The process of establishing the mandates consisted of two phases: The formal removal of sovereignty of the state previously controlling the territory. The transfer of mandatory powers to individual states among the Allied Powers.
Concept note-2: -The League of Nations was also in charge of supervising the Mandate system. The “mandated territories” were former German colonies and Ottoman territories placed under what the Covenant called the “tutelage” of mandatory powers until they could become independent states.
Concept note-3: -The League of Nations mandate granted the French Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon, the British Mandate for Mesopotamia (later Iraq) and the British Mandate for Palestine, later divided into Mandatory Palestine and the Emirate of Transjordan (1921–1946).
Concept note-4: -Curiously, the colonies under the control of the British Empire were given their own mandates, including South West Africa (now Namibia), which was run by South Africa.
Concept note-5: -Despite Lawrence of Arabia’s promise, the British and French divided key Ottoman territories into their own mandates at the San Remo conference. Through the Sykes-Picot agreement, the British took Iraq and Palestine (which included Jordan) whereas the French took Lebanon and Syria.
