Concept note-1: -The U.S. Navy’s decisive victory in the air-sea battle (June 3-6, 1942) and its successful defense of the major base located at Midway Island dashed Japan’s hopes of neutralizing the United States as a naval power and effectively turned the tide of World War II in the Pacific.

Concept note-2: -On Jun 6, the weather cleared and planes from Hornet were able to sink the heavy cruiser Mikumo, while damaging a destroyer and the heavy cruiser Mogami . This last attack by Hornet ended one of the most important and decisive Naval battles in history.

Concept note-3: -Though the June 1942 Battle of Midway is often seen as the turning point of the war in the Pacific, the Solomon Islands campaign, including the Battle of Guadalcanal, was equally pivotal.
