Concept note-1: -Authoritarianism: A kind of dictatorship. Manchukuo:The Japanese after establishing their control in Manchuria renamed it as Manchukuo.

Concept note-2: -Japanese militarism (, Nihon gunkoku shugi) refers to the ideology in the Empire of Japan which advocates the belief that militarism should dominate the political and social life of the nation, and the belief that the strength of the military is equal to the strength of a nation.

Concept note-3: -The notion that expansion through military conquest would solve Japan’s economic problems gained currency during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Concept note-4: -The seed of Japanese militarism-which led to atrocities that still haunt East Asian diplomacy-firmly took root during World War I, historians say. In the lead-up to the war, as the Western world focused on the tensions in the Balkans, Japan had been expanding its influence in East Asia.

Concept note-5: -During World War II, Japan was an absolute monarchy that was ruled by consent of the Emperor. Most of the decisions of the government were managed by the Emperor’s ministers who governed with his approval. When Emperor Hirohito assumed power in 1926, he mostly kept his father’s cabinet in power.
