THE UNITED STATES IN WORLD WAR I

[SOURCES]
What was the main goal of the D-Day invasion?

(A) to force Hitler’s immediate surrender

(B) to end Italy’s participation in the war

(C) to destroy Germany’s capacity to make weapons

(D) ** to force Germany to fight on two fronts

EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Opening a second front would relieve pressure on the Soviet Union in the east and the liberation of France would weaken Germany’s overall position in western Europe. The invasion, if successful, would drain German resources and block access to key military sites.

Concept note-2: -Their objective was to gain a foothold in Nazi-occupied France, so they could push inwards towards central Europe and dismantle Adolf Hitler’s regime. The odds were never in the Allies’ favor. “Operation Overlord, ” as the entire D-Day was called, was an incredibly challenging plan to begin with.

Concept note-3: -The war would not be over by Christmas. But D-Day had opened another major front, where the bulk of America’s rapidly expanding army could at last be brought to bear. It led to the liberation of France, denying Germany any further exploitation of that country’s economic and manpower resources.

Concept note-4: -“We couldn’t wait.” Meanwhile, the American and British air forces in England conducted a tremendous bombing campaign that targeted railroad bridges and roadways in northern France to prevent the Germans from bringing in reserves to stop the invasion. Allied leaders set June 5, 1944, as the invasion’s D-Day.
