Concept note-1: -The war ended in 1945 with the defeat of the Axis powers and the dissolution of their alliance. As in the case of the Allies, membership in the Axis was fluid, with some nations switching sides or changing their degree of military involvement over the course of the war.
Concept note-2: -Who won World War I? The Allies won World War I after four years of combat and the deaths of some 8.5 million soldiers as a result of battle wounds or disease. Read more about the Treaty of Versailles.
Concept note-3: -In World War II, the three great Allied powers-Great Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union-formed a Grand Alliance that was the key to victory. But the alliance partners did not share common political aims, and did not always agree on how the war should be fought.
Concept note-4: -Seventy-five years ago this month, Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allies, bringing to a close the European war.
