EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -When war broke out in Europe in 1914 President Wilson declared that the United States would follow a strict policy of neutrality. This was a product of a longstanding idea at the heart of American foreign policy that the United States would not entangle itself with alliances with other nations.

Concept note-2: -The United States wanted to remain neutral because after WWI, most European nations refused to pay their debts. Because arms factories made so much money during the war, many Americans felt they had steered the country into war. The U.S. tried to remain neutral, but the British needed help.

Concept note-3: -Americans wanted to remain neutral because we wanted to be able to trade with France and Britain. Staying neutral with France and Britain was difficult because both countries captured our trade ships.

Concept note-4: -Between 1935 and 1937 Congress passed three “Neutrality Acts” that tried to keep the United States out of war, by making it illegal for Americans to sell or transport arms, or other war materials to belligerent nations.
