Concept note-1: -US President Woodrow Wilson sought to maintain US neutrality but was ultimately unable to keep the United States out of the war, largely because of escalating German aggression.
Concept note-2: -Americans wanted to remain neutral because we wanted to be able to trade with France and Britain. Staying neutral with France and Britain was difficult because both countries captured our trade ships.
Concept note-3: -When President Wilson spoke to Congress on 2 April, asking that they vote for a declaration of war, he argued that the United States had no selfish interests in joining the conflict but that American participation would make the world safer for democracy.
Concept note-4: -When war broke out in Europe, the United States immediately declared its neutrality. President Woodrow Wilson stated that America must be “impartial in thought as well as in action.” For a century, the U.S. had stayed out of European affairs.
