EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -During World War I, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson promoted the concept of “self-determination, ” meaning that a nation-a group of people with similar political ambitions-can seek to create its own independent government or state.

Concept note-2: -What happened to President Wilson’s goal of granting self-determination after the war? It was never realized. It was applied in Europe, but not to colonies in Africa or Asia.

Concept note-3: -It was Wilson’s goal to keep America completely out of World War I, which began in 1914-and have the country serve as a peacemaker to other nations. However, his efforts were largely unsuccessful; many countries failed to take seriously any of Wilson’s offers to be a mediator.

Concept note-4: -In his Fourteen Points-the essential terms for peace-U.S. Pres. Woodrow Wilson listed self-determination as an important objective for the postwar world; the result was the fragmentation of the old Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires and Russia’s former Baltic territories into a number of new states.
