Concept note-1: -Rhineland, German Rheinland, French Rhénanie, historically controversial area of western Europe lying in western Germany along both banks of the middle Rhine River. It lies east of Germany’s border with France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Concept note-2: -To the west, Germany borders The Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg; to the southwest it borders France.

Concept note-3: -The Franco-German border (French: Frontière entre l’Allemagne et la France; German: Grenze zwischen Deutschland und Frankreich) separates France and Germany and has a length of 450 km (280 mi), about half of it along the Rhine.

Concept note-4: -Alsace-Lorraine, German Elsass-Lothringen, area comprising the present French départements of Haut-Rhin, Bas-Rhin, and Moselle.
