Concept note-1: -In sum, Germany forfeited 13 percent of its European territory (more than 27, 000 square miles) and one-tenth of its population (between 6.5 and 7 million people).

Concept note-2: -In mainland Europe, Germany’s borders shrank, reducing the country’s size by approximately 65, 000 square kilometers, and roughly 7 million people (13 and 12 percent of their respective totals).

Concept note-3: -The Versailles Treaty forced Germany to give up territory to Belgium, Czechoslovakia and Poland, return Alsace and Lorraine to France and cede all of its overseas colonies in China, Pacific and Africa to the Allied nations.

Concept note-4: -Germany accepted responsibility for the war and lost 68, 000 km² of territory, including Alsace and Lorraine, which had been annexed in 1870, and 8 million inhabitants.

Concept note-5: -After the Potsdam conference, Germany was divided into four occupied zones: Great Britain in the northwest, France in the southwest, the United States in the south and the Soviet Union in the east. Berlin, the capital city situated in Soviet territory, was also divided into four occupied zones.
