Concept note-1: -In October of 1949, the Soviet Union responded with the establishment of the German Democratic Republic, a Communist state known as East Germany. In 1952, East Germany began policing its Western border to stop the flight of engineers, scientists and doctors to West Germany.
Concept note-2: -After Germany’s defeat in World War II, the Allies each wanted to have some measure of control over the country, so it was split into four zones. These eventually merged and became known as West Germany and East Germany, which were separated by the Berlin Wall.
Concept note-3: -On September 29, 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union agree to divide control of occupied Poland roughly along the Bug River-the Germans taking everything west, the Soviets taking everything east.
Concept note-4: -Oder–Neisse Line, Polish–German border devised by the Allied powers at the end of World War II; it transferred a large section of German territory to Poland and was a matter of contention between the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the Soviet bloc for 15 years.
