EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -Berlin, the capital city situated in Soviet territory, was also divided into four occupied zones. Germany also lost territory east of the Oder and Neisse rivers, which fell under Polish control.
Concept note-2: -On September 29, 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union agree to divide control of occupied Poland roughly along the Bug River-the Germans taking everything west, the Soviets taking everything east.
Concept note-3: -In 1949, Germany formally split into two independent nations: the Federal Republic of Germany (FDR or West Germany), allied to the Western democracies, and the German Democratic Republic (GDR or East Germany), allied to the Soviet Union.
Concept note-4: -After Germany’s defeat in World War II, the Allies each wanted to have some measure of control over the country, so it was split into four zones. These eventually merged and became known as West Germany and East Germany, which were separated by the Berlin Wall.
Concept note-5: -Along with Farther Pomerania a small area of Western Pomerania including Stettin (today Szczecin) and Swinemünde (today Świnoujście) was transferred to Poland in 1945.
