EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -The war pitted the Central Powers-mainly Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey-against the Allies-mainly France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and, from 1917, the United States. It ended with the defeat of the Central Powers.
Concept note-2: -Despite the fact that Germany was a powerful country at the start of World War I in 1914 it was still unable to win the overall war. At the outbreak of the war Germany’s army was well-trained and had over 4 million soldiers, and would prove a difficult opponent on the battlefields of Europe.
Concept note-3: -The Versailles Treaty forced Germany to give up territory to Belgium, Czechoslovakia and Poland, return Alsace and Lorraine to France and cede all of its overseas colonies in China, Pacific and Africa to the Allied nations.
Concept note-4: -Germany and its allies were known as the Central Powers: Germany and Austria-Hungary, later joined by the Ottoman Empire (Turkey plus the Middle East) and Bulgaria.
