TREATY OF VERSAILLES

[SOURCES]
Why did France push for harsh punishment of Germany?

(A) France was an ally of Austria and French officials were angry that Germany joined with them during WW1

(B) ** France had been devastated when Germany invaded and didn’t want Germany to be strong enough to start another war.

(C) French officials wanted to make sure that Germany became angry enough to fight again so that France could gain military revenge.

EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Initially, France-who was represented by George Clemenceau-wanted to punish Germany for the war they felt the Germans had caused. France wanted to regain its territory in the Rhineland. Great Britain sought reparations, or payments for damages, from Germany.

Concept note-2: -The Treaty of Versailles punished Germany harshly because Allied powers, Great Britain and France especially, blamed Germany for starting the war and the subsequent death and destruction.

Concept note-3: -The French, in particular, wanted Germany to pay a heavy price for the war, including loss of territory, disarmament and payment of reparations, while the British saw Wilson’s plan as a threat to their supremacy in Europe.

Concept note-4: -French revanchism was a deep sense of bitterness, hatred and demand for revenge against Germany, especially because of the loss of Alsace and Lorraine following defeat in the Franco-Prussian War.
