EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -The war pitted the Central Powers-mainly Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey-against the Allies-mainly France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and, from 1917, the United States. It ended with the defeat of the Central Powers.

Concept note-2: -Allied victory in France and Belgium ensured that Germany could not win the war (despite defeating Russia on the eastern front and Serbia in the Balkans) and that the British, French and Americans would go on to shape the postwar settlement at Versailles.

Concept note-3: -The Allies won World War I after four years of combat and the deaths of some 8.5 million soldiers as a result of battle wounds or disease.

Concept note-4: -The Germans suffered heavily for their failure American troops march to the front. The Allies’ eventual manpower advantage was important but not the only factor that led to victory in 1918.
