Concept note-1: -1835 DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION It was held a year and a half before the election in order to prevent the emergence of opposition to President Andrew Jackson’s hand-picked successor, Vice President Martin Van Buren. There were 265 delegates from twenty-two states and two territories.
