Concept note-1: -Illinois’s first two senators, Ninian Edwards and Jesse Thomas, took office on that day. Illinois’s longest-serving senator is Shelby Cullom, who served from 1883 to 1913.

Concept note-2: -Explanation. On January 5, 1859, the Illinois Senate and House of Representatives met in joint session and selected Stephen A. Douglas for United States senator. It was the culmination of one of the most famous U. S. Senate races in history.
