Concept note-1: -Obama became the first African American to be elected to the presidency, as well as being only the third sitting United States senator elected president, joining Warren G. Harding and John F. Kennedy.

Concept note-2: -Why was the 2008 election a historic event? The election featured a nomination battle between a woman and an African American man. An African American leader was nominated by a major party. An African American leader was elected president for the first time.
