Concept note-1: -The first debate for the 1960 election drew over 66 million viewers out of a population of 179 million, making it one of the most-watched broadcasts in U.S. television history.

Concept note-2: -The first of these presidential debates took place on September 26, 2016, and set the record as the most-watched debate in American history, with 84 million viewers.

Concept note-3: -Instead, on November 4, 1956, two surrogates debated the issues on network television: for the Democrats, former First Lady and party icon Eleanor Roosevelt; for the Republicans, the senior senator from Maine, Margaret Chase Smith. That’s right-the first televised presidential debate featured two women.
