EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -The secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of six more states-Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas–and the threat of secession by four more-Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America.
Concept note-2: -Many maintain that the primary cause of the war was the Southern states’ desire to preserve the institution of slavery. Others minimize slavery and point to other factors, such as taxation or the principle of States’ Rights.
Concept note-3: -Before his inauguration, Secessionist assembly majorities in the Deep South states resolved to secede from the United States and form the Confederate States of America were Lincoln to win the election. Virginia was deeply divided over whether to join them, as were all of the eight states in the Upper South.
