Concept note-1: -Sherman’s March to the Sea (also known as the Savannah campaign or simply Sherman’s March) was a military campaign of the American Civil War conducted through Georgia from November 15 until December 21, 1864, by William Tecumseh Sherman, major general of the Union Army.

Concept note-2: -The purpose of Sherman’s March to the Sea was to frighten Georgia’s civilian population into abandoning the Confederate cause. Sherman’s soldiers did not destroy any of the towns in their path, but they stole food and livestock and burned the houses and barns of people who tried to fight back.

Concept note-3: -How did Sherman’s March to the Sea affect the infrastructure of the state of Georgia? The March to the Sea destroyed Georgia’s railroads, roads, cotton gins, mills, and warehouses. People in the state were proud that Georgiaborn Sherman distinguished himself during the march.

Concept note-4: -Sherman lost the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in June 1864. In September of that same year his army captured Atlanta before embarking on its March to the Sea, from Atlanta to Savannah, in November. Sherman later chronicled his wartime experiences in a memoir, published in 1875.

Concept note-5: -Sherman’s goal was to destroy the Army of the Tennessee, capture Atlanta and cut off vital Confederate supply lines. While Sherman failed to destroy his enemy, he was able to force the surrender of Atlanta in September 1864, boosting Northern morale and greatly improving President Abraham Lincoln’s re-election bid.
