Concept note-1: -Bull Run was the first full-scale battle of the Civil War. The fierce fight there forced both the North and South to face the sobering reality that the war would be long and bloody.
Concept note-2: -Yet the Second Battle of Bull Run, otherwise known as the Second Battle of Manassas, was significant in its own right. An unambiguous Southern victory, it cemented General Robert E. Lee’s reputation as a brilliant tactician and paved the way for his first invasion of the North.
Concept note-3: -The Union suffered 2, 896 casualties including 460 killed. The Confederates had 1, 982 casualties with 387 killed. The battle left both sides realizing that this would be a long and horrible war. The day after the battle, President Lincoln signed a bill that authorized the enlistment of 500, 000 new Union soldiers.
Concept note-4: -The First Battle of Bull Run (called First Manassas in the South) cost some 3, 000 Union casualties, compared with 1, 750 for the Confederates. Its outcome sent northerners who had expected a quick, decisive victory reeling, and gave rejoicing southerners a false hope that they themselves could pull off a swift victory.
