Concept note-1: -The destruction of Southern rail lines devastated the Confederacy. On November 15, 1864, U.S. forces led by Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman burned nearly all of the captured city of Atlanta, Georgia.

Concept note-2: -But the way to the sea was not open; Sherman still had to contend with the Confederate army of Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood. So Sherman proposed to split his Union force, taking 62, 000 of his best troops on a destructive march, while Maj.

Concept note-3: -What was General William T. Sherman’s strategy for defeating the Confederates in Georgia in 1864? He orchestrated a scorched-earth military campaign aimed at destroying the will of the southern people.

Concept note-4: -Before he set off on his famous March to the Sea on November 15, Sherman ordered that Atlanta’s military resources, including munitions factories, clothing mills and railway yards, be burned. The fire got out of control and left Atlanta in ruins.

Concept note-5: -This campaign, known as Sherman’s March to the Sea, was marked by its objective, to cripple the Confederacy’s ability to wage war. They destroyed anything and everything important to the war effort, leaving ruins where Georgia’s great cities once stood. Read more about it!
