Concept note-3: -Lincoln was declaring that the United States would continue to fight to preserve the nation that was created by the Founding Fathers who wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Concept note-4: -Who are “our fathers”? Lincoln tells us when and by whom the country was founded. Let students know that these details will be addressed later more thoroughly. For now, though keep it simple – that “our fathers” founded the country some time ago.

Concept note-5: -What is the main purpose of the Gettysburg Address? The main purpose of the Gettysburg Address at the time it was given was to commemorate a new National Cemetery at Gettysburg. It also gave Lincoln’s purpose for pushing on to win the Civil War-the abolition of slavery and the reunification of the Union.
