Concept note-1: -President Lincoln and the Confederate President Davis both strongly disagreed on whether or not slavery would continue to exist in the south.

Concept note-2: -Lincoln threatened war if the Confederacy did not return to the Union, while Davis promised to reconsider secession. Lincoln promised the South it could keep its enslaved people if it returned to the Union, while Davis insisted the Confederacy would not return.

Concept note-3: -In his inaugural address, Lincoln promised not to interfere with the institution of slavery where it existed, and pledged to suspend the activities of the federal government temporarily in areas of hostility. However, he also took a firm stance against secession and the seizure of federal property.

Concept note-4: -5. Secession would destroy the world’s only existing democracy, and prove for all time, to future Americans and to the world, that a government of the people cannot survive.
