EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -The First Battle of Bull Run (called First Manassas in the South) cost some 3, 000 Union casualties, compared with 1, 750 for the Confederates. Its outcome sent northerners who had expected a quick, decisive victory reeling, and gave rejoicing southerners a false hope that they themselves could pull off a swift victory.

Concept note-2: -Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, issued in 1863 after the costly Union victory at Antietam, freed all enslaved persons within the Confederacy. More significantly, it changed the goal of war to one not only to preserve the Union but also to end slavery.

Concept note-3: -The Battle of Bull Run, the first major clash in the Civil War, ended in a Confederate victory.

Concept note-4: -The Union army’s defeat at Bull Run shocked and sobered members of Congress, making it painfully clear that the war would last much longer than 90 days and be harder fought than anyone had expected.
