Concept note-1: -Jefferson Davis, the first and only president of the Confederate States of America, was a Southern planter, Democratic politician and hero of the Mexican-American War who represented Mississippi in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. He also served as U.S. secretary of war (1853-57).

Concept note-2: -As president of the Confederate States of America throughout its existence during the American Civil War (1861–65), Jefferson Davis presided over the South’s creation of its own armed forces and acquisition of weapons. Davis chose Robert E. Lee as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia in June 1862.

Concept note-3: -On November 6, 1861, Jefferson Davis was elected president, not of the United States of America but of the Confederate States of America. He ran unopposed and was elected to serve for a six-year term.
