EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -The Seven Days ended with McClellan’s army in relative safety next to the James River, having suffered almost 16, 000 casualties during the retreat. Lee’s army, which had been on the offensive during the Seven Days, lost over 20, 000.
Concept note-2: -After the war, McClellan served as an administrator for a number of engineering firms and, in 1878, was elected Governor of New Jersey. In his final years, the former general penned a defense of his tenure as Commander of the Army of the Potomac, but died before he could see it published.
Concept note-3: -The effectiveness of his campaign was damaged when he repudiated his party’s platform, which promised an end to the war and negotiations with the Confederacy. He served as the 24th Governor of New Jersey from 1878 to 1881; he eventually became a writer, and vigorously defended his Civil War conduct.
