Concept note-2: -The war also killed a significant number of civilians; battles raged across farm and field, encampments of troops spread epidemic disease, guerrillas ensnared women and children in violence and reprisals, draft rioters targeted innocent citizens, and shortages of food in parts of the South brought starvation.
Concept note-3: -Fear, uncertainty, and deprivation was a common feeling for Civil War refugees. Forced to abandon their homes as occupying forces approached, civilians fled with limited household goods and only modest amounts of clothing and personal items.
Concept note-4: -The men worked in the fields, cared for animals, and grew food for the family. The women performed household duties, caring for children, preparing food, tending the garden and chickens. Once the men left for war, women tried to keep the farms going.
