EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Irvin McDowell was a Union general during the American Civil War (1861–1865). He commanded the army that was defeated at the First Battle of Manassas on July 21, 1861, the first large land battle of the conflict.

Concept note-2: -The end result of the battle was a Confederate victory and Federal forces retreated to the defenses of Washington, DC. One week later, General George McClellan was appointed head of the Army of the Potomac. The three maps cited below all use the name “Bull Run” to identify the battle.

Concept note-3: -On July 21, 1861, Union and Confederate armies clashed near Manassas Junction, Virginia. The engagement began when about 35, 000 Union troops marched from the federal capital in Washington, D.C. to strike a Confederate force of 20, 000 along a small river known as Bull Run.

Concept note-4: -After pushing back Federal forces in the Battle of Glendale the day before, Confederate General Robert E. Lee attacked Union General George B. McClellan’s army in the Battle of Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862.
