Concept note-1: -The engagement began when about 35, 000 Union troops marched from the federal capital in Washington, D.C. to strike a Confederate force of 20, 000 along a small river known as Bull Run.

Concept note-2: -The total number of Union troops present at the First Battle of Bull Run was about 35, 000 although only about 18, 000 were actually engaged. The Union army was organized as follows: 1st Division of Brig. Gen.
